idea-scout triage — teaching software engineering with LLM + MCP (issue #1009)

Closes the daily idea-scout candidate #1009 (tools/idea_scout.py, filed 2026-06-27). The scout judges whether a candidate is new and on-topic; this note is the human triage it hands off — adopt as a capability, defend against as a threat, or cite as prior art (see docs/idea-scout.md). Verdict: close / not adopted — out of kernel scope. This is a software-engineering EDUCATION / pedagogy paper, not infrastructure, an attack, or a defense. It proposes no system fak would adopt, no threat to defend against, and no mechanism-level prior art for fak’s adjudication or cross-turn-reuse design. Recorded only as one external data point on MCP’s move into mainstream industrial SE practice — the adoption trend fak’s tool-call seam exists to govern. No code change.

What it is

An education paper, not a security or systems one. Its premise: the rapid integration of LLMs and the Model Context Protocol into industrial software engineering has created a need to update software-engineering education to match. Its contribution is a collaborative teaching model that embeds LLM- and MCP-driven tools into three places — daily teaching, code assistance, and engineering simulations — and pairs that with industry-internship partnerships, so students apply the same tools in real settings. The reported outcome is pedagogical: stronger programming competence, practical problem-solving, and proficiency with intelligent engineering tools, with a closer tie between academic preparation and professional practice.

It proposes a curriculum and a teaching framework. It does not propose a serving system, a protocol, an attack, or a defense.

Why this is out of scope for fak

fak is an agent kernel: one Go binary that sits between an AI agent and the tools it calls and adjudicates every tool call before it runs — a default-deny capability floor (security gate) plus do-the-shared-setup-once cross-turn reuse (performance gate). The three triage questions resolve cleanly, and all three to “no”:

The one honest residual — adoption-trend context, not a citation

The single durable signal worth keeping is contextual, not technical: the paper is one more external indicator that MCP is moving from a frontier protocol into mainstream industrial — and now academic — software-engineering practice. That trend is precisely what makes shipping a default-deny capability floor on MCP tool calls worth doing: the more places MCP-driven tools run (including the hands of students heading into industry), the larger the surface a runtime trust gate governs. This belongs in fak’s why-now context, alongside the broader MCP-adoption signal — it is not prior art for any fak mechanism, and this note does not cite it as such.

Triage decision

Action: close #1009 as triaged → out of scope / not adopted (this note). No code change in this increment: the right small artifact for an off-mission research candidate is the recorded verdict, not a speculative feature.

Scout calibration (no code change). The candidate surfaced under topic mcp-security (score 47, the lowest of the day’s three idea-scout hits — cf. #1007 MIRROR red-teaming and #1008 CoT-training-gains) on a bare model context protocol / mcp (title) keyword match plus a recency/freshness bonus (≤30d). This is a true on-topic-by-keyword, off-mission-by-content candidate: the title carries the exact term the scout watches, but the body is education research. The scout behaved as designed — it judges new and on-topic, never worth building, and it handed the call to human triage (see docs/idea-scout.md, “A note on what it does not do”). A single hit is not enough to retune the scorer (the same mcp (title) term correctly surfaced #911 ShareLock and #584 PrologMCP), so there is no change to tools/idea_scout.py — only this recorded exemplar of the keyword-vs-mission gap, a sibling of the PrologMCP capability/security miscategorization triaged in RESEARCH-prologmcp-symbolic-tool-triage-2026-06-24.md.
